The name “The Mourning” signifies mourning the state of the world and the hope to lift the world through music and art to a higher plane.
The Mourning was founded in 2017 when Johnny Ray, bursting with ideas, couldn’t keep them in anymore and began writing the pre-production work for their first EP. Johnny then recruited his friend Jason Berlin on drums, and The Mourning was born.
The band started out highly influenced by the likes of Opeth, Steven Wilson, and Haken. The debut EP centered around heavy use of keyboards. The duo wasted no time, going straight to Foxbloom Recordings with Producer/Engineer David Alex to begin recording their debut EP “Theosis.” They included amazing features from jazz guitarist Thomas Griggs (Intervals, Berklee) and jazz saxophonist Eric Mullins.
In early 2018, “Theosis” was released, and the band played a CD release show, widening their footprint in the Tampa Bay Area. Within six months of the release, they played a few shows but ultimately decided to focus on creating their first full-length album. As soon as Theosis was released, Johnny had started to work on a full-length album with a full band lineup in mind, feeling inspired by being in the studio they so many talented musicians.
They made the decision to fly in Francesco Pinter (Berklee College of Music), to record guitars on the album and in the studio. They spent September 2018 to May 2019 painstakingly recording the songs, again with Recording Engineer David Alex, also bringing in musician guests Thomas Griggs (Intervals) and Jeff Pogan (Suicidal Tendencies, Oneironaut) who are featured on the album.
In 2021, Johnny did not want to compromise on the album’s production quality, so he tapped Alex Nasla (Geargods, Ex-Witherfall) to Produce, Mix, and Master the album. Falling in love with the music and the people, he also decided to join the band shortly after as keyboardist and vocalist.
From 2022 to 2024, the band spent those years recording six music videos. Alex Nasla filmed and directed four of them, with Thomas Crane filming one, and Nick Rigas filming one.
The album is now complete and will be released on July 10, 2024, on CD and on all streaming platforms.
